Minnesota AD Mark Coyle releases details of P.J. Fleck’s contract extension

Good news came to Minneapolis on Tuesday, when it was confirmed that the University of Minnesota and head football coach P.J. Fleck agreed to terms of a lengthy contract extension, locking up Fleck for quite some time. At the time of the announcement, details were fairly vague about the new contract.
During a meeting with the media on Tuesday, however, Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle was more than happy to elaborate on some of those details. Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press shared some of the specifics.

Minnesota and Fleck agreed to a seven-year deal, keeping the head coach in the Twin Cities through the 2026 season. He will also see a $1 million increase in his base annual salary, jumping from $3.6 million to $4.6 million per year. Fleck’s buyout in his first year of the new deal is $10 million, but sees a significant decrease in following year.
In Year 2, that number drops to $4.5 million. In years three and four, it falls to $3 million and finally ends at $2 million in Fleck’s fifth and sixth seasons.
Along with Fleck’s extension and raise, he was also able to receive an additional $1.05 million for his staff beginning in February 2020. Minnesota’s assistants were paid $3.04 million last year.
Fleck has the Gophers at 8-0 and ranked No. 13 nationally in his third year with the program. Minnesota is 20-13 under Fleck.
