It was announced Thursday night that Illinois had added a number to its Class of 2020.

The Fighting Illini got a verbal commitment from Lavar Gardner, a junior college athlete from Hutchinson Community College. He is listed by 247Sports as an athlete, while he has been tabbed as a linebacker/defensive back as well.

Gardner is a 6-foot, 215-pound prospect who has scholarship offers from Nebraska, Southern Miss, Texas State and UMass. He does not have a ranking according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings.

“Coach Miles Smith, Jake Ellsworth and Joe Price hit me up and were like, ‘Man, we really love your film. We love how you play the game. We will love for you to come in and play nickel/WILL linebacker for us because of your speed which allows you fit the scheme of our defense,” Gardner told Illini Inquirer earlier this month. “Next thing you know, the next day God blessed me with the opportunity to receive a full-ride offer from the University of Illinois, and it really means so much to me. I’m very thankful for them believing in me.”

Illinois’ entire 2020 recruiting class can be seen here. It currently consists of nine players and ranks No. 90 nationally and No. 13 in the Big Ten.
