When you have one of the best teams in college football, there’s a good chance a lot of players are going to be serious candidates for some of the nation’s top individual honors. That’s certainly the case at Ohio State this year.
Monday, a flurry of awards finalists were listed for some college football’s top individual honors. A handful of Buckeyes were included on those lists, including DE Chase Young, QB Justin Fields, RB J.K. Dobbins and DB Jeff Okudah.
Young is up for several awards and has been named a finalist for the Maxwell Award (best overall player), the Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player) and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player). So far this season, Young has totaled 38 tackles with 16.5 sacks and six forced fumbles. He’s considered to be a contender for the Heisman Trophy.
Fields was named a finalist for the Dave O’Brien Award (best quarterback). The Ohio State quarterback has thrown for 2,352 yards, rushed for 445 more and accounted for 43 total touchdowns.
Dobbins is one of two B1G players named a finalist for the Doak Walker Award (best running back). The other B1G name is Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor, who claimed the award last year. Dobbins has rushed 1,446 yards and 17 touchdowns through 11 games.
Okudah has been named a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back). He’s totaled three interceptions, four pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and 25 tackles on the year.
