Former Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell has decided to take another break from football and has stepped away from Miami, at least temporarily, according to head coach Manny Diaz.
On Monday, Diaz confirmed that Martell has taken another leave of absence from the program. That decision kept him out of last weekend’s game against FIU and he will not play in the regular season finale against Duke. This is the second time Martell has taken a leave of absence.
“Tate came to me midweek last week, felt like he needed another personal leave,” Diaz said, according to 247Sports. “We decided together that it would probably be better just to go ahead and take this one and the Duke game and sit out instead of being in and out, in and out and he also reiterated that Miami is where he wants to be. He doesn’t want to leave, but he’s got to resolve these issues and we support him in that.”
Martell took his first personal leave after losing the starting job at Miami to Jarren Williams ahead of the season opener against Florida. Martell had been expected to be the starter for the Hurricanes after transferring from Ohio State.
As a recruit, Martell was a four-star member of Ohio State’s 2017 recruiting class. He decided to leave the program in the 2019 offseason, following Justin Fields’ transfer from Georgia. Martell has been in the mix at quarterback and wide receiver at Miami this season.
The Hurricanes are 6-5 this season.
