Coaching contracts are always interesting.
RELATED:
Some coaches want more guaranteed, some want more bonuses to play for, some want certain luxuries more than others. It’s all based on preference and what the school is willing to give in order to get that coach’s services.
This season, two Big Ten coaches have hit it big when it comes to reaching and achieving their bonuses, which can lead to hefty payouts. Among the top 5 in college football, both Kirk Ferentz and Tom Allen — from Iowa and Indiana, respectively — are both on that list:
FBS public-school head coach bonus leaders this season:
–Oregon's Mario Cristobal: $1 million
–LSU's Ed Orgeron: $625K
–Iowa's Kirk Ferentz: $600K
–Utah's Kyle Whittingham: $331,667
–Indiana's Tom Allen: $300K
–Boise State's Bryan Harsin: $210Khttps://t.co/k6Rk4tF1RQ— Steve Berkowitz (@ByBerkowitz) December 1, 2019
This year, for example, Ferentz cashed in on a $100,000 bonus when his Hawkeyes got their sixth win of the season — becoming bowl eligible. He also got an extra $500,000 for hitting eight wins (among other bonuses that can be found here).
For Allen, he received an extra $100,000 when the Hoosiers his their sixth win of the season. And, for every win after that, he got an extra $100,000. Indiana finished the 2019 regular season with a record of 8-4, meaning Allen — so far — has received $300,000 in bonuses just from the team’s sixth, seventh and eighth wins alone.
More information on each FBS team’s coach and their bonuses can be found here.
