Drew Brees has a chance to set NFL history this season, but at least one person is predicting Brees steps away heading into 2020.
Playing on Monday Night Football, Brees will have a chance to set the all-time passing touchdown record for the NFL. Brees sits at 537 career touchdowns with the record set at 539 by Peyton Manning. Tom Brady sits at 538 career scores.
Brees missed some action with a thumb injury this season, but he continues to play at a high level with over 2,000 yards, a 73.6 completion percentage, and 17 touchdowns in eight games. Still, he turns 41-years-old in January, and he might fill inclined to hang it up following the season.
John Ourand with Sports Business Daily is predicting that to happen following the 2019 season. In fact, Ourand is predicting Brees to retire and step directly into a broadcasting role for the 2020 season:
CBS will re-sign Tony Romo, not allowing its top analyst to leave as it’s negotiating with the NFL on a new deal. ESPN will hire Nate Burleson to join the “Monday Night Football” booth with Joe Tessitore and Booger MacFarland. Drew Brees will retire and walk right into an on-air role with Fox.
Players stepping directly into a broadcast role is not something that is unheard of. Romo is the most recent and well-known success story, quickly becoming a well-respected analyst. It will be interesting to see if Brees follows a similar career pattern.
