First reported by WCBI (Columbus, Mississippi), two Mississippi State Bulldogs football players were critically injured in a car wreck on Tuesday night.

The vehicle the players were driving collided with the rear-end of an 18-wheel truck on Highway 25 in Oktibbeha County, where Starkville is located. One of the players, sitting in the back seat at the time of the accident, was transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson in critical – but stable – condition. A third player was treated for minor injuries and released.

The identities of the three players have not yet been made public. CollegeFootballTalk shared further information on Twitter, attached below.

Finishing their regular season at 6-6, the Bulldogs required a victory over the rival Ole Miss Rebels in the Egg Bowl to qualify for a bowl game.

After dropping the Outback Bowl, 27-22, to the Iowa Hawkeyes a year ago, head coach Joe Moorhead is looking for his first bowl win in his second year at the helm. Facing the Louisville Cardinals (7-5, 5-3 ACC), the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl from Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee will kick at 4:00 p.m. ET on December 30 on ESPN.
