One official in the Boca Raton Bowl may need an ice bath on Sunday morning.
Saturday evening, Florida Atlantic and SMU were going head to head in the Boca Raton Bowl, with both teams trying to add a postseason victory to their record to close out the season. It was all FAU through most of the contest, building a big lead in the third quarter.
In the third quarter of Saturday’s game, a play for SMU turned into a disaster for the offense and for an official.
Trailing 35-14, SMU fumbled the football in its own territory and FAU scooped and scored on the play, increasing the lead to 42-14. When the Owls defender picked up the loose football, SMU quarterback Shane Buechele tried to chase down the defender, but a referee was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It resulted in a nasty collision and the official getting familiar with the turf. Below is the video:

The collision didn’t appear to be too awful, but the official may need some aspirin and an ice pack or two on Sunday to recover from the hit.
Both SMU and FAU entered the Boca Raton Bowl with 10 wins on the season.
