The Iowa family suffered a big loss this December with the passing of former head coach Hayden Fry.
During Friday’s Holiday Bowl, the Hawkeyes honored Fry and Bump Elliot by removing the Tigerhawk logos from their helmets. Iowa also did a good job honoring the two men on the field by rolling past USC for a big win.
During Saturday’s College GameDay on ESPN, the crew highlighted the win by Iowa and discussed the impact of Fry. In particular, Lee Corso shared a heartwarming story of how the legendary coach reached out to him after Corso had been fired by Indiana:
“I will always remember the day after Indiana fired me. I was really down. No one liked me and I was useless. I got a call from Hayden Fry,” said Corso. “He asked me to be on his staff for the East-West Shrine Game and be an assistant. That call changed my life. He was a good friend. Most importantly, a friend like him makes a call like that when you need it, just before Christmas. I’m going to miss that man, he was a great guy.”
Kirk Herbstreit echoed the sentiments of Corso and went on to say that no one can say anything negative about Fry:
“To this day, the Hawkeyes are still Iowa because of what he established. You’re never going to find anyone say anything negative about Hayden Fry,” said Herbstreit.
Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the Fry family and the Hawkey family for their loss. He was indeed a special man.
