The 2019 College Football Playoff is shaping up to be one of the best yet.

With three undefeated teams, numerous potent offenses, and a number of intriguing storylines, the action on Saturday is some you won’t want to miss. The head coaches involved also have something in common.

According to ESPN’s Matt Barrie, every head coach involved in this year’s Playoff shares the trait that they were promoted from within.

Those coaches are Ryan Day (Ohio State), Dabo Swinney (Clemson), Ed Orgeron (LSU), and Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma). Three of those coaches also succeeded coaches that won national championships with Day replacing Urban Meyer, Orgeron replacing Les Miles, and Riley replacing Bob Stoops.

While schools are sometimes tempted to fill vacancies from outside of the program, it is also true that assistants are sometimes lured away to take head coaching positions at other schools. It is not always easy, but sometimes waiting for the opportunity is the best bet. Either way, these coaches should be commended for their work this season.
