Unfortunately, Illinois fell short in Monday’s Redbox Bowl loss to Cal.

With a shot to finish the year with a winning record, the Illini could not generate enough offense and allowed 35 points in a disappointing end to the season. Despite the run to reach bowl eligibility, Illinois will once again finish with a losing record at 6-7.

During the game, QB Brandon Peters had a critical interception, but he also displayed his usual toughness and resilience. Facing a fourth-and-17 late in the game, he literally went all-out trying to secure a first down.

Unable to find any Illini open downfield, Peters scrambled and raced for the sticks. As defenders closed in, Peters tried to leap for the marker from five yards away.

It was an incredible effort and he appeared to reach the line to gain, but the official marked him just short:

Though the season ended in disappointing fashion, Peters will be back again in 2020. With his leadership and toughness, Illinois will likely be glad to have him for one more season.
