Last season, Joe Burrow talked about how it would be a cool experience to see LSU and Ohio State meet in the College Football Playoff. It didn’t happen, as both the Tigers and the Buckeyes fell short of reaching the four-team field.
Things were a little closer this year, however. LSU earned the No. 1 seed and Ohio State sat at No. 2 in this year’s College Football Playoff field. A win for both would’ve set up a national championship bout between Burrow and his former team. But it didn’t come to fruition.
Burrow and the Tigers did their part, smoking Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl 63-28. But the Buckeyes couldn’t secure a Fiesta Bowl victory, blowing a 16-0 lead and falling to Clemson 29-23 for the first loss of the year. It sets up a Tiger showdown in New Orleans on Jan. 13.
Now that Burrow knows he won’t be playing his old team, he talked briefly about Ohio State’s loss to Clemson. In a perfect world. he would’ve loved the opportunity to go head to head with the Buckeyes.
“It was kind of sad a little bit to see their season end like that,” Burrow said, according to Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors. “I know they worked really hard to get there.
“It would have been fun to play a lot of my old teammates, a lot of my old friends…but we’ll play whoever.”
LSU (14-0) will take on defending national champion Clemson (14-0) in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. A win in New Orleans would cap an incredible season for the Tigers, one that saw Ed Orgeron win the National Coach of the Year award, Burrow hoist the Heisman Trophy into the air, and a 15-0 season.
Kickoff is set for Monday, Jan. 13 with start time scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and the game will air on ESPN.
