Joe Moorhead’s run as the Mississippi State head coach came to an end after just two seasons, as the university decided to part ways with him following the 2019 season. The decision came after the Bulldogs’ loss to Louisville in the Music City Bowl.

After Moorhead’s termination was confirmed, the two-year head coach sent out a tweet, thanking the Mississippi State community for its support. He also thanked the players, fans, alumni and administration for the opportunity.

Moorhead was 14-12 in two seasons at Mississippi State. This year, the Bulldogs finished the year 6-7. As the program hung around the .500 mark for most of the season, rumblings had begun midway through the year that Moorhead may not be back.

Still, two years seems like a quick trigger for a program that hasn’t had historical success on the gridiron.

Prior to taking over at Mississippi State, Moorhead was the offensive coordinator at Penn State under James Franklin (2016-17). The Nittany Lion offense was one of the B1G’s most high-powered units during those seasons, winning a B1G title in 2016.

It will be interesting to see if Moorhead gets any opportunities to run an offense in the coming weeks.
