A ‘Refcast’ will be one of the alternate viewing options for the national title game for ESPN’s Megacast
ESPN is rolling out every possible option to watch the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday, Jan. 13. When No. 1 LSU and No. 3 Clemson take the field in New Orleans, there will be plenty of viewing choices.
Much the like College Football Playoff semifinal games, ESPN is launching its Megacast for the national title bout next Monday. That will include a Coaches Film Room, Command Center, Field Pass, DataCenter and local radio calls, among other options.
But perhaps the most interesting — or maybe it’s the least interesting — is the “Refcast” ESPN will be debuting for the game. The goal is to provide fans “an option that allows viewers to watch the game through former referees’ perspective.”
At least three former officials — John Perry (NFL), Matt Austin (SEC), and Judson Howard (Pac-12) — will provide their commentary and opinions throughout the game. The broadcast could add a fourth former official, as well.
Considering some of the officiating throughout bowl season, this may be an interesting route for ESPN to take. And while listening to officials explain calls throughout the entirety of a game isn’t exactly the definition of “fun,” it would provide some interesting insight on certain calls throughout the game.
A Pac-12 officiating crew is set to call the national title game.
