Nebraska’s top wide receiver and one of the better pass catchers in the B1G is taking a leave of absence, according to an update from the football program.

Monday, Nebraska released a statement saying that senior receiver JD Spielman is taking a “temporary” leave of absence from the team and is at home with his family in Minnesota. It is unlikely the receiver participates in spring practice with the Huskers.

“JD Spielman is dealing with a personal health matter currently, and at this time is not expected to participate in spring practices,” Scott Frost said in a statement. “Everyone’s focus right now is on JD’s well-being and providing him with the appropriate support. We anticipate JD returning to the team in time for summer conditioning.”

Last season, Spielman was Nebraska’s top receiver, totaling 898 yards and five touchdowns on 49 receptions. His totals nearly doubled freshman Wan’Dale Robinson, who finished second on the team in receiving yardage (453).

Spielman has been a key member of Nebraska’s offense since arriving in 2017. In three seasons with the Huskers, he’s totaled 2,546 yards, totaling over 800 receiving yards each season. He’s also caught 15 touchdown passes.
