Maryland has claimed a share of its first B1G basketball title since joining the conference in 2014.

Sunday, the Terrapins closed out the 2019-20 regular season in impressive fashion, defeating Michigan 83-70 in College Park on Senior Day. With the win, Maryland claims a share of the B1G regular season title. Wisconsin also owns a share after a 60-56 road win against Indiana on Saturday.

It’s Maryland’s first men’s basketball conference title since joining the B1G. That win also guarantees the Terps will have the top overall seed for next week’s B1G Tournament, and will not play until Friday.

Anthony Cowan Jr. led the Terps in scoring, totaling 20 points and dishing eight assists in the win. He also grabbed four rebounds. Jalen Smith registered another double-double, posting 18 points and 11 boards for the day. Eric Ayala scored 19 points and Aaron Wiggins added 15 off the bench.

Maryland improved to 23-7 with the victory and finishes 14-6 in B1G play. While Maryland is currently sharing the title with Wisconsin, it could be a three-way tie atop the league standings, as a win for Michigan State would also put the Spartans at 14-6.

MSU plays Ohio State on Sunday.

This is also the first regular season title Mark Turgeon has claimed as the head coach at Maryland, dating back to the program’s final years in the ACC.
