Ohio State guard opting to hit NCAA transfer portal

Ohio State guard DJ Carton has decided to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal and move on from Columbus. He made an announcement publicly via his official Twitter account on Thursday.
Carton stepped away from the Buckeye basketball program midway through the season, citing mental health and wellness as a reason for his leave of absence. Both the guard and head coach Chris Holtmann made it clear that Carton remained a member of the team while he stepped away from the game temporarily.
“Buckeye Nation, I first want to say thank you to all the Ohio State fans who supported me during the difficult times I went through this year,” Carton wrote on Twitter. “I also want to thank the university, my teammates, the coaches and all the staff who went above and beyond to help my family and me this year. After some careful thought and consideration, I have decided to make a fresh start and enter the transfer portal. I wish Coach Holtmann and my teammates the best of luck next year. Please respect my decision.”

Carton, a freshman, played in 20 games for Ohio State this season. He was averaging 10.4 points, 3.0 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting 47.7 percent from the floor. He took a leave of absence in late January and did not return for any of the Buckeyes’ remaining games.
Ohio State finished the basketball season with a 21-10 record, which included an 11-9 mark in B1G play.
