Luka Garza has been recognized as the best center in college basketball for the 2019-20 season.

On Tuesday, Garza was named the recipient of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award. The announcement came from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The award is now in its sixth year of existence.

Garza nearly averaged a double-double last season, averaging 23.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game for the year. He scored 20 points or more in 25 games this season, while also recording 15 double-doubles throughout the year.

“I have looked up to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar my entire life,” Garza said. “To win an award in his name is a tremendous honor and one that I share with my family. I am incredibly grateful to have the coaching staff, group of teammates, and my family, which put me in position to win this award. Lastly, I’d like to thank the loyal support of Hawkeye Nation!”

This season, Garza was also recognized as the B1G Player of the Year, and was a first-team All-B1G and All-American selection. With his help, Iowa ended the season with a 20-11 record, which included an 11-9 mark in conference play.
