Penn State is adding some talented depth to its secondary.
On Thursday evening, the Nittany Lions received a verbal commitment from four-star safety Jaylen Reed, a native of Detroit, Michigan. The 6-foot, 190-pound defensive back made his announcement with a video he posted on Twitter. He’s the fourth player to commit to the Nittany Lions during the 2021 recruiting period.
“Home is where the heart is,” Reed wrote on Twitter, along with the video. “No turning back, I’m all in till it’s over. Blessed to be in the position, I’m in…committed.”

Reed had offers from 32 other programs outside of Penn State. Other programs offering the four-star safety were Florida, Georgia, Florida State, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, Purdue, Rutgers, Tennessee, USC and West Virginia, among others.
Per 247Sports, Reed ranks as the No. 10 safety in the 2021 recruiting class and is the eighth-best player out of the state of Michigan. Overall, he’s listed as the No. 237 player of the cycle.
According to the scouting reports on 247Sports, Reed is a consistent playmaker in the secondary and is also great at helping in run support. He’s got a high football IQ and possesses a great nose for the football.
With Reed’s commitment, Penn State has bumped up to eighth in the B1G in the recruiting rankings, and 24th nationally. He’s the second four-star player to pledge to the Nittany Lions, joining offensive tackle Landon Tengwall.
