A former Minnesota defensive lineman and member of the Gophers’ 2018 recruiting class has decided to to stay in the B1G, though he’ll be swapping divisions.

Mayan Ahanotu announced on Twitter on Thursday that he will be transferring from Minnesota to Rutgers to continue his athletic career. He hopped in the NCAA transfer portal after spending two years with the Gophers.

Ahanotu redshirted in 2018, his first year at Minnesota. He played in two games that season but did not record any statistics. Last year, the redshirt freshman participated in three contests and registered one tackle, fittingly against Rutgers.

Ahanotu will have three years of eligibility remaining, but will have to sit out during the 2020 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He could receive a waiver from the association for immediate eligibility, which would then allow him to participate in the upcoming year.

Out of high school, Ahanotu was a three-star defensive end from Tampa, Florida. He received many offers on the recruiting front, but settled on Minnesota.

This is another big addition from the portal for new Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano. Even though the Scarlet Knights ranked 13th in the B1G’s recruiting rankings for 2020, Schiano has been able to land eight transfer players, five of which have B1G experience.
