The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft took place on Thursday night, providing football fans an opportunity to consume something sports related for the first time in over a month. Even with the event being conducted virtually, it was a smooth operation that provided some interesting storylines.

Five B1G players heard their names called on the first day of this draft, with two players being selected in the top three picks.

Ohio State defensive end Chase Young was the first B1G player off the board, getting selected No. 2 overall by the Washington Redskins. The very next pick, the Detroit Lions took Buckeyes cornerback Jeff Okudah at No. 3.

One more Ohio State player was selected in the first round, with Damon Arnette being selected by the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 19. Arnette was considered one of the top 10 defensive backs in this year’s draft class, but was a bit of a surprise to see in the first round. Most had tabbed him as an early pick in the second round.

Iowa offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs was one of two non-Buckeyes out of the B1G to get selected in the first round. The former Hawkeye was chosen with the No. 13 pick and will be joining Tom Brady in Tampa Bay as a member of the Buccaneers.

Michigan center Cesar Ruiz rounded out the list of B1G players to receive a first-round selection. The 31-game starter at Michigan was taken at the No. 24 spot by the New Orleans Saints.

This year’s draft saw a dip in production from the B1G. Last season, the league produced seven first-round picks. Some of the names who were lingering around the first round but will have to wait a little bit longer are:

  • Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin
  • Zack Baun, LB, Wisconsin
  • J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State
  • A.J. Epenesa, DE, Iowa
  • Antoine Winfield Jr., S, Minnesota
  • Yetur Gross-Matos, DE, Penn State

Draft coverage will resume with Rounds 2-3 on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
