Ryan Day on WR K.J. Hill slipping to 7th round: ‘That one I don’t understand’

It was another promising year in the NFL Draft for Ohio State. The Buckeyes saw 10 former players selected in this year’s event, with three first-round picks and seven players chosen in the first three rounds.
Head coach Ryan Day was mostly pleased with where his former players were drafted over the weekend, and wasn’t too surprised by what he saw over the last three days. When it comes to wide receiver K.J. Hill, though, the Buckeye head coach was a little shocked about how far he slipped.
“That one I don’t understand,” Day said on a conference call with reporters on Sunday. ” To see him go in the seventh round…. most productive receiver in Ohio State history.”
Hill was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the seventh round with the 220th pick. He was the fifth B1G wide receiver selected, behind KJ Hamler (Penn State), Tyler Johnson (Minnesota), Quintez Cephus (Wisconsin) and Donovan Peoples-Jones (Michigan).
During his four-year career at Ohio State, Hill caught 199 passes for 2,312 yards and 20 touchdowns. He thought about declaring for the NFL Draft following the 2020 season, the most productive in his career in Columbus, but opted to return for his final season.
Last year, Hill totaled 636 yards and 10 touchdowns on 57 receptions in one of the most prolific offenses in the country.
Day reiterated that Hill will be a steal for the Chargers and he expects the former Buckeye to have a solid career in the NFL.
“I’ve never seen anybody be able to cover K.J. Hill,” Day said.
