Former Maryland head football coach dies at 96

Former Maryland head football coach Roy Lester died on Sunday, the school announced in a statement on Monday morning. He was 96 years old.
Lester was the head coach at Maryland from 1969-71, but was previously on the Terrapins staff as an assistant coach from 1956-58. Most of his coaching career was spent at the high school level, making a handful of stops throughout the state of Maryland from the 1950s through the 1990s.

Along with coaching the Terps for three seasons, Lester coached at Richard Montgomery High School (1959-68), Paint Branch High School (1972-78) and Magruder High School (1979-93). He led his teams to three state championships while on the high school circuit.
Before his coaching days, Lester was a three-sport athlete at West Virginia University. He played football, basketball and baseball during his college years.
