The University of Illinois has announced plans to allow student-athletes back on campus as early as June 3. The school released a statement on Friday.

Illinois says that is preparing for the return of groups of student-athletes back to campus for voluntary summer training with staggered arrival dates. This news comes a few days after the NCAA lifted its suspension on a moratorium on all organized team activities, which will end on June 1.

“These student-athletes will return according to a detailed plan developed by the [Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics], led by its sports medicine staff, in consultation and collaboration with the Champaign-Urbana Public Health Distric; Carle physicians; McKinley Health Center; SHIELD, the University’s committee tasked with developing testing protocols for the campus; and the Big Ten Conference,” Illinois said in a statement.

“Through its partnership with SHIELD, DIA will pilot a return protocol that the University can further refine for the potential arrival of the student body in the fall.”

Student-athletes participating in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball will be permitted to return to campus for voluntary workouts from June 1 through June 31. Other sports are set to be discussed in the near future.

Earlier this week, Ohio State announced its student-athletes will be returning June 8.
