Total expenses, revenue numbers released for 2019 fiscal year

Each year, numbers regarding total expenses and revenue are gathered from universities across the country.

Thanks to usatoday.com, they put together a user-friendly database for any person to look at. On Thursday, those expense and revenue numbers were released.

Within the top 25 for revenue for the 2019 fiscal year, nine came from the B1G. Leading the country in revenue was Texas at over $223 million. Texas A&M came in at No. 2 at over $212 million.

Here’s where the B1G landed:

• No. 3 Ohio State: $210,548,239
• No. 4 Michigan: $197,820,410
• No. 6 Penn State: $164,529,326
• No. 11 Wisconsin: $157,660,107
• No. 14 Iowa: $151,976,026
• No. 18 Michigan State: $140,010,865
• No. 21 Nebraska: $136,233,460
• No. 24 Minnesota: $130,456,454
• No. 25 Indiana: $127,832,628
• No. 29 Illinois: $118,565,501
• No. 31 Purdue: $110,844,907
• No. 33 Maryland: $108,796,303
• No. 39 Rutgers: $103,251,280

A few things to note — Northwestern’s numbers are not included. Ohio State had the highest total number of expenses in the country, coming in at $220,572,956. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Buckeyes lost over $10 million last year, as noted by Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, who talked about fundraising.

From Smith:

“There’s no way I would be sitting here with 36 sports if we had a $10 million deficit,” Smith said back in February. “It just wouldn’t happen. I’d be dropping sports, and ticket prices would go up.”

According to the numbers from usatoday.com’s database, all B1G schools (again, excluding Northwestern) turned a profit except for Ohio State and Illinois.
