Before Penn State even took the field for Saturday’s spring game, it got a nice victory.

The Lions landed a commitment from one of the top players in Pennsylvania. Four-star offensive guard C.J. Thorpe announced that he’ll come to State College in 2017:

The Pittsburgh native turned down the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Michigan and more in favor of the Lions. He made the announcement while he was in Happy Valley for the Penn State spring game.

Thorpe is the No. 7 player in Pennsylvania and the No. 9 guard in the 2017 class, according to the 247sports composite rankings.

It’s a major early pickup for Penn State. Thorpe is the highest-rated player and the third four-star recruit in the Lions’ 2017 class.

To sweeten the deal, the Lions also got a commitment from three-star offensive tackle Robert Martin.

He’s the 12th-rated player in New Jersey and the No. 65 offensive tackle in the 2017 class. The two commitments bumped PSU’s class from four members to six.
