The Governor of New Mexico is urging New Mexico and New Mexico State to suspend fall sports this season, due to increased concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Albuquerque Journal obtained a letter from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham asking for the two schools to reconsider hosting fall sports, including college football, in 2020 due to the pandemic. In the letter, Grisham says “it’s critical that you postpone collegiate athletics in this moment of escalating danger.”

In the letter, Grisham points to the increased number of cases of COVID-19 in the 20-39 age range.

“I know what I am asking you to contemplate is difficult and unprecedented, but these are difficult and unprecedented times,” Grisham says. “Fighting COVID-19 is a team sport. I am asking each of you to join me and take it upon yourselves to do everything you can to fight COVID-19. Together we can protect all New Mexicans, and if we are successful, we can resume contact sports and re-engage in the camaraderie and joy they bring all of us in a safe manner as soon as we can.”

New Mexico competes in the Mountain West Conference while New Mexico State is an independent program.
