First known positive COVID-19 test for FBS head coach reported

The first known positive COVID-19 test for a head football coach at the FBS level has been reported.
On Wednesday, WTOL’s Jordan Strack reported that Toledo head coach Jason Candle has tested positive for COVID-19. According to Strack’s report, the Rockets head coach is in self-isolation and does not have any symptoms.

Earlier on Wednesday, Strack reported that 269 total COVID-19 tests had been conducted among Toledo’s student-athletes, coaches and staff. There were five positive results, though during the initial report it was stated that no staff or coaches were positive.
In that initial report, five student-athletes of 188 tested positive and all 81 coaches and staff tested negative. It’s unclear if Candle’s positive results makes that six positive tests for the school or if he was part of the initial five that were confirmed earlier.

Several individuals returning to campus have tested positive and have followed medical guidelines. Candle is the first known FBS head coach to test positive for the virus, though due to privacy laws schools are not reporting names of individuals.
Candle has been the full-time head coach at Toledo since 2016. The Rockets are 34-19 under his leadership.
