The wait is finally over.

Connor Cook has an NFL home, and it’s not where anybody expected him to go.

The Michigan State quarterback was selected No. 100 overall by the Oakland Raiders, who traded up with the Cleveland Browns to get him with the second pick of the fourth round. Cook will join MSU teammate Shilique Calhoun, who was picked by the Raiders on Friday.

Cook will have to sit behind third-year quarterback Derek Carr, who had a breakout sophomore season last year in Oakland. He’ll compete with former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin for the backup job.

There was hope that Cook would end the B1G’s 20-year drought without a quarterback selected in the first round. But even he admitted that he didn’t expect to be picked on Thursday night. Surely he didn’t expect to wait until Saturday, and surely he didn’t expect to be the seventh quarterback to come off the board.

The polarizing signal-caller will have plenty of eyes on him, just as he did in East Lansing. The first-team All-B1G QB was at the helm during MSU’s best three-year stretch in program history.

Cook, who won the 2015 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation’s best senior quarterback, led the school to its first ever College Football Playoff berth. The three-year starter finished his career 34-5 as the program’s all-time winningest quarterback.

Jon Gruden said that with his pedigree and experience, he was surprised that Cook wasn’t being considered as the first pick in the draft. That, of course, was Jared Goff. But Cook will have a chance to make his mark as the best quarterback in the 2016 class.

And finally, Cook will get to let his playing do the talking.
