Lovie Smith took some time out of his day to thank educators for their continued dedication to young people across the country. And he didn’t just send out a note on social media or make a quick statement.
This week, the Illinois head coach hopped on a virtual meeting with a handful of teachers as a surprise. He wanted to thank teachers for their continued service to education and all that they do.
Monday night, the Illinois Twitter account shared snippets from Smith’s surprise arrival on the call:
Surprise! It’s @LovieSmith.
The head coach surprised teachers for @CFPExtraYard’s #BigDayforTeachers, including Mrs. Hildreth, a preschool teacher in Downers Grove, who thought she was meeting with her principal.

Football coaches are extremely busy. With practices, non-stop recruiting and other tasks that go into the day-to-day work of a B1G head coach, it can be hard to take time away from the job. But it was cool to see Smith take time out of his day to surprise some teachers.
It seems they were pretty excited about it, as well.
