Ohio State fans checking out SEC football on Saturday as they sit a month away from the first B1G kickoff may hear a familiar name during broadcasts.
Redshirt freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis will be the likely starter for No. 4 Georgia on Saturday, as the Bulldogs open the season against Arkansas. The former 4-star quarterback and member of the 2019 recruiting class was once an Ohio State commit.
Head coach Kirby Smart all but confirmed that Mathis would be the starter when the Bulldogs kick off the season on Saturday afternoon. With Jamie Newman opting out, it created a clearer path for Mathis to win the starting job, even with former USC quarterback J.T. Daniels transferring to UGA.
Mathis had committed to Ohio State in June 2018 and appeared to be ready to sign his National Letter of Intent with the Buckeyes. But on the first day of the Early Signing Period, the 4-star quarterback had a change of heart and flipped his commitment from Ohio State to Georgia.
As a prospect, Mathis ranked as the No. 11 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class.
