The College Football Playoff selection is going to have a difficult job this year. That’s the case every year, but with so many unique circumstances surrounding the 2020 season, picking the four best teams to compete for a national championship is going to be pretty complex.
Conferences are playing a varying number of games. Some teams will play nonconference opponents while others will strictly stick to league play. Some games could be canceled or postponed. There are a going to be a lot of considerations this year.
Obviously, these circumstances have the chance to affect every team and every conference. But ESPN’s David Pollack thinks that the B1G and Pac-12 start the year out with a disadvantage to the other three Power 5 conferences. A limited schedule along with little wiggle room could be problematic.
“I do think that the Big Ten and Pac-12, because of the schedule and how it is, they’re a little bit behind the 8-ball,” Pollack said. “They have the least amount of room [for error].”
The B1G is planning to play a 9-game schedule in 9 weeks, with the season finale coming the day before the College Football Playoff committee releases its final rankings. The Pac-12 is playing a 7-game season with a championship game on the same date as the B1G’s final week.
It could make for one of the most interesting seasons in recent memory.
