Maryland announces multiple coaches, AD to take additional voluntary pay cut

The University of Maryland’s athletic department has announced that over a dozen coaches, as well as athletic director Damon Evans, will be taking additional voluntary pay cuts in response to the financial ramifications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The department released a statement on Thursday.
Per the release, 13 coaches have volunteered to take a 10% pay cut. This comes in addition to the pay salary reduction imposed by the University of Maryland earlier in the year.
Head coaches taking pay cuts include:
- Sasho Cirovski — men’s soccer
- Brenda Frese — women’s basketball
- Michael Locksley — football
- Missy Meharg — field hockey
- Cathy Reese — women’s lacrosse
- John Tillman — men’s lacrosse
- Mark Turgeon — men’s basketball
In addition to the seven head coaches taking pay cuts, six of Maryland’s highest-paid assistant coaches from varying sports will also voluntary take the 10% pay reduction. Evans is voluntarily taking the cut, as well.
“This is an incredible demonstration of generosity and commitment to the mission of our athletic department,” Evans wrote. “I appreciate these coaches’ continued understanding during these unprecedented times. The pandemic has dealt us a financial crisis that required difficult decisions. We continue to stay resilient and we will get through this together. Focus on health, safety and welfare of our student-athletes remains our top priority as we are committed to maintaining their student experience to the best of our abilities.”
