The conversation started almost immediately after Urban Meyer announced his decision to step down as the head coach at Ohio State. Will the three-time national champion ever step back on the sideline.
Meyer never officially closed the door on a return to coaching. In the two years since retiring, he’s often said “I believe I am done.” Meyer’s new broadcast partner at FOX, Matt Leinart, believes the former Buckeyes leader has coached his last game.
“I’m gonna say no. I think he’s done,” Leinart said on The Ryen Russillo Podcast. “…Here’s my personal opinion. And I would be lying to say I haven’t talked to him about it, since he took the TV job last year. But my sense is that he’s done. I think he loves—and I know this for a fact—he loves family time. He loves that his head is not exploding. He has the cyst. It’s a real health issue for him. And now he’s getting paid to talk on TV and hang out, and we have a great group, man. We have a lot of fun. So I’ll say I wouldn’t be shocked if he ever went back, but my opinion is that I think he’s done. ”

Meyer stepped down as the head coach at Ohio State following the 2018 season, with his last game being a Rose Bowl victory over Washington. He immediately joined the FOX Big Noon Kickoff show as an analyst and has blossomed into a fan favorite in that role.
It’s never easy for a head coach to step away, and with Meyer still being a relatively young mind in the world of coaching, there is still a possibility that he makes a return to the field.
For now, Leinart believes Meyer is done, and he’s enjoying his time with family and in a new role as an analyst.
