Kirk Herbstreit ‘a lot more open’ to future in NFL broadcasting

One of college football’s most revered broadcasting teams has tested the NFL waters this fall. Due to some changes in ESPN’s broadcasting schedule in 2020, Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit have been on the call for a few Monday Night Football games on the network this year.
While Herbstreit still loves the college game, he admits that he’s enjoyed calling NFL contests more than he expected. If there’s a potential change in his future, the longtime College GameDay personality and Game of the Week analyst would be open to a change in his career.
“I had an absolute ball calling that game [Steelers-Giants] and it made me reflect a little bit differently toward my future and what I might want to do down the road,” Herbstreit told The Big Lead. “Like I said, I hope to always do college football. But if NFL would be in my future, I’m a lot more open to that thought than I was maybe prior to that experience.
“Most people in my shoes are just looking to grow and grow, ‘one day maybe I’ll do the NFL.’ I’ve never had that. With that being said, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed that game.”
Herbstreit will be back on a Monday Night Football call in the NFL’s Week 5, heading to Foxboro for Monday’s meeting between the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots. Fowler will be the play-by-play voice.
Both Fowler and Herbstreit have received rave reviews about their ability to call Monday Night Football games, especially given how much attention they have to place on college football each week. But because they’ve been excellent in the MNF booth, there’s some hope that the pair will soon be the primary broadcast duo for those games.
We can all agree that if that’s the case, hopefully Fowler and Herbstreit are still working in college football, as well.
