Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano announced Thursday two major transfer players will be eligible to play for the Scarlet Knights in 2020.
According to Rutgers Rivals, both sophomores Ireland Burke and Aaron Lewis are going to be available for Rutgers to use this fall on the gridiron.
Burke is a 6-foot-3, 298-pound defensive tackle from Jamaica, New York. He spent his freshman season at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. before transferring to Piscataway to play for coach Schiano.
Lewis was a 4-star high school player and the top-ranked recruit in New Jersey who spent his freshman season in Ann Arbor under Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan. Schiano convinced the highly touted player to return home, marking a recruiting coup for Schiano and a potential shot heard round the state. Rutgers is back in play for New Jersey’s top high school talent.
It’s significant news for the Scarlet Knights, who are attempting to build talent and depth across the board under Schiano. Having both players eligible for the upcoming season is a huge preseason victory for the program.
Rutgers is scheduled to open the 2020 campaign against Michigan State at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday.
