Nebraska’s attempts to fill its schedule with a nonconference opponent have reportedly been denied by the Big Ten.
Earlier Thursday morning, it was reported the Huskers were close to finalizing a game with UT Chattanooga for this Saturday to replace Wisconsin. The Badgers had to cancel this week’s game with Nebraska due to a COVID-19 outbreak.
However, it appears the Big Ten is blocking that from happening.
That’s according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg:
The #B1G has denied #Nebraska’s attempt to replace its canceled game against #Wisconsin with FCS Chattanooga, sources tell @ClowESPN and me. Chattanooga had already tested staff and players Wednesday and came back negative. But the game will not happen.

According to CBS’ Dennis Dodds, the Huskers had agreed to pay UTC between $200,000 to $250,000.
Chattanooga AD Mark Wharton just told me the Big Ten has denied a request for the Mocs to play Nebraska on Saturday. Neb had guaranteed $200K-$250K. Entire UTC team had tested negative using PCR tests Wednesday night. (more)

Instead, the Huskers will be granted an impromptu bye week — something they may appreciate later in the season.
Their game against Wisconsin was declared a no-contest and will not count in the standings for either team.
Nebraska’s next game is on the road at Northwestern in Week 3.
