In any other college football season, fans storming the field after a major upset victory would be no big deal. It’s part of what makes college football such a special sport to watch.

During a pandemic, however, there’s going to be some criticism. And that’s what came the direction of Notre Dame fans following the Fighting Irish’s double overtime upset victory over No. 1 Clemson on Saturday night.

Notre Dame defeated Clemson 47-40 to improve to 7-0 on the season. Sure, the Tigers were without star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, but it will still a monumental victory for the Irish, who are fighting for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

After the thrilling victory, Notre Dame students stormed the field to celebrate the big win. Even though the stadium was at limited capacity and there are numerous restrictions regarding attendance, it didn’t stop the students and fans in South Bend.

People will argue about whether or not this was the safe and smart thing to do. That’s not really our place to decide. However, what does make this interesting is that schools and conferences have strict COVID-19 policies and protocols in place.

Could the field storming in South Bend result in an outbreak among the football teams — both Notre Dame and Clemson were still on the field — and force both to cancel or postpone some games moving forward? It’s obviously too early to tell.

That’s just something to keep an eye on over the next few days.
