Ryan Day releases statement after Ohio State’s game vs. Maryland is canceled
The B-One-G conference is cancelling its third game in four weeks after the Maryland Terrapins announced an outbreak of Covid-19 across the roster and called off their game against the Ohio State Buckeyes scheduled for Saturday.
“Maryland Football will pause all team-related activities due to an elevated number of COVID-19 cases within the Terrapin’s program,” the school revealed in a press release published Wednesday afternoon. “The Ohio State game scheduled for Saturday, November 14 has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.”
“The joint decision to pause football activities and cancel Saturday’s game was made by Director of Athletics Damon Evans and University of Maryland President Darryll Pines, following a recommendation from University health officials, and in consultation with the Big Ten Conference. Over the past seven days, eight football players have tested positive for COVID-19.”
The decision to call off the game makes five Top 25 contests called off across the country. The four additional games were in the SEC, with No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Texas A&M, No. 12 Georgia, & No. 24 Auburn all being compelled to not play due to Covid-19. The Buckeyes ranked No. 3 nationally.
Ohio State head coach released a statement expressing disappointment for the lost opportunity to play, but wishing Maryland’s program the best circumstances around its recovery and return to play.
#Buckeyes coach Ryan Day: "Obviously, we are disappointed at not being able to compete this week, but I am incredibly proud of our team and the way they have handled themselves. … We wish Maryland, their student-athletes and programs well as they battle through this issue.”
