Those who have watched C.J. Beathard are usually in agreement. He has the “it” factor that quarterbacks need.

He’s clutch, he rarely turns the ball over and he can extend plays with his legs. Despite groin and hip injuries, he led Iowa to its first 12-0 regular season in school history.

After a second-team All-B1G season, how good can Beathard be if he stays healthy? Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis weighed in on that with a strong opinion.

“I think he has a chance to be the best I’ve ever coached,” Davis said Wednesday on KxNO’s “Hawk Central” program. “He’s got a wonderful feel for the game. We give him a lot of flexibility. He’s fixing to get a lot more flexibility because we feel like he’s ready to handle that and do a lot more at the line of scrimmage.”

For Davis to say he thinks Beathard can be “the best he’s ever coached” is saying a lot. Before Davis got to Iowa, he was the offensive coordinator at Texas, where he coached the likes of All-Americans Vince Young and Colt McCoy. A guy with 38 years of college coaching experience certainly has seen his fair share of quarterbacks.

So yeah, that’s quite the statement.

Davis was one of the big factors in the controversial decision to award Beathard the starting job over Jake Rudock following the 2014 season. Needless to say, that’s worked out well so far.

Beathard will be the driving force behind Iowa’s bid to win another B1G West crown and get back to the B1G Championship. Davis expressed the coaching staff’s desire to keep him healthy and to limit his exposure to contact, but not to hold him back from doing what he does best.

It’s clear that Davis values Beathard as Iowa’s most important piece heading into 2016.
