The Ivy League has announced the cancellation of winter sports for the 2020-2021 season.

The move echoes the league’s early movement on cancellation of its fall sports earlier this year, along with similar action suspending all athletics back in March when the COVID-19 pandemic began. They were the first conference to cancel the basketball tournament, a decision that would be followed by many.

Originally, the fall sports were postponed until the spring, but those are now off entirely. Spring sports are also delayed until March.

The league became the first Division I conference to officially call off winter sports, with coaches being informed by athletic department officials, and subsequent team meetings being scheduled to officially notify players.

The decision came just 13 days before the scheduled start of the 2020-21 college basketball season. The vote was not a surprise, as pessimism about the league presidents allowing winter sports or a basketball season to proceed was widespread.
