With outside linebacker Izayah Green-May not available to play against Michigan on Saturday, freshman Nick Herbig earned his first career start, and took full advantage of the opportunity.

The true freshman led the Badgers with five tackles, with three for loss and was key for the Badgers defense in holding Michigan to just 47 rushing yards and a total of 219 yards on the day. Herbig played 35 snaps and made four critical stops for Wisconsin. He led the team in that category and finished second in pressures.

Wisconsin easily disposed of the Wolverines in Ann Arbor 49-11.

Herbig’s effort against Michigan earned him True Freshman of the Week honors from 247 Sports. Ranked No. 143 overall in the 2020 class per 247Sports Composite, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound native of Hawaii was the highest-rated defensive signee for the Badgers since 2012.

Wisconsin outside linebackers coach Bobby April of Herbig earlier this offseason: “He is a violent, ferocious football player who will do anything to be successful.”
