For the first time this season, it appears like there is some optimism surrounding the Illinois football program.
After a rough 0-3 start, the Illini pulled out a road victory against Rutgers to pick up that all-important first win of the season.
Though the win itself isn’t head-turning, it’s a step in the right direction for head coach Lovie Smith’s team. Things looked incredibly bad for Smith after the Illini were bulldozed by Wisconsin in Week 1.
Then, Illinois lost to Purdue and Minnesota at home. With not much hope, the Illini managed to go into Piscataway and win 23-20.
Now that Smith and his team have one in the win column, Illinois can look to improve that in Week 5 against Nebraska. Smith spoke to the media about just that on Monday in his regularly scheduled press conference.
Let’s start with the team’s players of the week.
#illini Lovie Smith said Isaiah Williams was team's offensive player of the week, Jake Hansen was the defensive player of the week and James McCourt was the special teams player of the week

Smith also provided some injury updates.
#illini Lovie Smith: Will continue to monitor Alex Palczewski
(Lovie usually says when a player has a season-ending injury)

#illini Lovie Smith didn't exactly answer when Brandon Peters will practice but suggested Brandon Peters will be able to practice whenever the team practices.

#illini Lovie Smith: Milo Eifler injured on the final play of practice on Friday. Khalan Tolson had barely any reps and played well. Not a season-ending injury for Eifler.

One of the standouts for Illinois was quarterback Isaiah Williams, who was filling in but was masterful in his start against Rutgers. He went 7-for-18 for 104 yards in the air. But he made the biggest impact with his legs as he ran 31 times for 192 yards and a touchdown.
#illini Lovie Smith on Isaiah Williams' height: "There's a guy in Arizona playing good football, he's not six feet. There's a guy in Seattle, he's not six feet."
Says it's a "different day" at the QB position.

But we still don’t know who’s going to be the man under center on Saturday against Nebraska.
#illini Lovie Smith: Our starting QB has been out and he's back this week. That's a good option.
Not going to name a starting QB.
"We have some good options going into this week."

#illini Lovie Smith: As a head football coach, all decisions go through me.

Here’s what else Smith had to say.
#illini Lovie Smith: Walk-on DT Bryce Barnes "has been outstanding in every role we've put him in." He earned playing time and earned more playing tie.

#illini Lovie Smith said Jake Hansen was moving to WLB regardless of Eifler's injury. Wanted to get Tarique Barnes on the field.
So the plan was SLB Eifler, MLB Barnes and WLB Hansen.
Tolson played great at SLB in relief of Eifler.
