Southern Mississippi put up a late rally, but fell to Western Kentucky on Saturday, 10-7.
But a lot of the action took place after the whistle, and tempers were high.
The two teams were involved in multiple altercations in the second half, and there was one ejection in the game -WKU senior linebacker Kyle Bailey for unsportsmanlike conduct. Multiple flags were thrown as the game became more heated.
It all came to a head, when with 1:44 left in the game the Southern Miss defense forced WKU to go 3-and-out and the Golden Eagles took over the ball at midfield. After four plays, Southern Miss was unable to convert a first down, culminating with a rough ending pass attempt ending right at the sticks.
Without getting a first down, Southern Miss turned the ball over on downs with 41 seconds left. But with tempers flaring even further, the refs decided to end the game at that point with USM and WKU players needing to be separated by coaches.
The action wasn’t contained to the field either, as at the half a rowdy WKU fan tried to take on the entire Southern Miss sideline.
