Getting defensive: Indiana among teams with highest shutout total since 2017

No. 9 Indiana is off to an undefeated start largely because of its defense. Indiana’s defense brought its best showing of the season last week with a 24-0 shutout at Michigan State.

Indiana is now tied for the national lead in shutouts (5) dating back to 2017.

Here’s the other four shutouts for Indiana since 2017:

  • Oct. 7, 2017- Charleston Southern – 27-0
  • Nov. 18, 2017- Rutgers- 41-0
  • Sept. 7, 2019- Eastern Illinois- 52-0
  • Oct. 12, 2019- Rutgers- 35-0

Indiana held Michigan State to 191 total yards and forced 4 turnovers. Tiawan Mullen tallied two interceptions while Reese Taylor added another.

Indiana leads the B1G in interceptions (10) and sacks (12), while ranking second nationally in turnover margin (+2). Indiana is 18th nationally in rush defense (111 yards per game).

Indiana coach Tom Allen raves about defensive coordinator Kane Wommack’s system.

“Kane’s done a great job preparing these guys and creating a culture of accountability on that side of the ball with how we practice and how we prepare,” Allen said, “and the attention to detail and just the things that it takes to be great in this conference.”

The Indiana defense will have its biggest test of the season on Saturday when they travel to face No. 3 Ohio State (11 a.m. CST/FOX).
