Nebraska looked nothing like the team that upended Penn State a week before, reverting back to their old form in a 42-23 home loss to Illinois.
Simply, it was a terrible loss from the Cornhuskers, now 1-2 on the year. Freshman quarterback Luke McCaffrey, who looked promising the past two weeks, struggled against Illinois.
With the loss, Nebraska is now 10-17 in what is now the third season under head coach Scott Frost.
McCaffrey threw three interceptions, part of an offense that didn’t necessarily have difficulties moving the ball but did have a hard time sustaining drives.
Turnovers were a major reason as Nebraska lost the ball five times on an afternoon where they gained 390 yards but simply were lacking with their ball security.
Frost spoke after the game following the loss to Illinois:
Frost: "I didn't see this coming."
Said he's embarrassed by the performance.

Nebraska coach Scott Frost: "I didn't really see this coming… I was embarrassed by our level of execution in all three phases.
"It was almost like our team thought, 'We won one game, we're good.'"

Scott Frost said the Huskers were lackadaisical today: "We’ve had to change culture… I feel like we’ve come a long way, but it sure didn’t feel like it today. The results are going to come when their expectations and effort are aligned."

Frost says, "I have as much or more confidence" that things will turn, but "it was bad today." Said it would be fair to judge from the outside that progress is lacking, but he says he knows what the #Huskers have in the locker room and believes in it.
