Ohio State DC Kerry Coombs taking ownership of Buckeyes’ defensive struggles vs. Indiana

Ohio State got the win over Indiana last weekend, but it didn’t come without some criticism.
The Buckeyes’ secondary kept Indiana in the game, as quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was able to throw for 491 yards and five touchdowns.
Ohio State had trouble guarding receiver Ty Fryfogle. He caught seven passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns.
On Tuesday, Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs took responsibility for the secondary’s performance vs. the Hoosiers.
“I think I need to do everything better,” Coombs told reporters. “What you see on the field is a reflection of what you’ve taught and how you’ve taught.
“When we make a mental mistake, it’s my fault. That’s something I didn’t get coached well enough.”

Ohio State is dead last in the Big Ten is passing yards per game this season at 291.
It’s possible that’s a reflection of the Buckeyes jumping out in front and their opponents’ opting to pass more to make up the deficit. However, Ohio State was No. 1 in passing defense in the Big Ten last season at just 156 yards allowed per game.
Ohio State faces Illinois this week on the road.
