The College Football Playoff has never featured a team from the Group of Five. Based on the first rankings of the season, it appears likely that trend will continue.

Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Ohio State landed in the top 4. The highest ranked Group of Five team is undefeated No. 7 Cincinnati.

To the shock and dismay of ESPN analyst Desmond Howard, undefeated BYU is ranked No. 14. BYU is behind five one-loss teams (Clemson, Texas A&M, Florida, Miami, Indiana) and three two-loss teams (Georgia, Oklahoma, Iowa State).

Howard blasted the committee for their placement of the Cougars.

BYU has looked dominant this season. BYU has scored at least 40 points eight times and only has one single-digit victory this season.

The highest final CFP ranking for a Group of Five team was undefeated UCF in 2017, who ended up sixth behind one-loss national champion Alabama and four two-loss teams.

BYU’s final regular season game is on Dec. 12 against visiting San Diego State.
