Media reacts to Ryan Day's positive COVID-19 test, not coaching Ohio State Saturday
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day will not be making the trip to Champaign this weekend after testing positive for COVID-19. The news was announced by the school’s athletic department on Friday, one day before the game.
The school announced that there has been an increased number of positive cases recently, though it will not have to cancel this weekend’s game against Illinois. The Buckeyes are 4-0 this season and are sitting at No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Day is the second B1G coach to have to miss a game due to a positive test this season. In Week 1, Purdue’s Jeff Brohm was also forced to watch the game from home after testing positive.
Larry Johnson, Ohio State’s defensive line coach, will be the interim head coach this week.
There’s potential that Day could miss Ohio State’s Week 7 contest against Michigan State, as well. The B1G policy is to make coaches sit out for 10 days before they can return to team activities, while players are forced to sit out 21 days. It’s unclear whether Day has taken multiple tests and been confirmed positive, or what day the positive test was taken.
