Indiana climbs back into top 10 as Hoosiers continue improbable AP Poll run

Indiana is in rarefied air for their program, now in the AP Top 25 Poll for a sixth straight week. That’s something that the program hasn’t done in over three decades.

The last time that the Hoosiers had strung together a half-dozen consecutive weeks of top 25 rankings was in 1987. Indiana, 5-1 after a 27-11 win against Maryland on Saturday, are No. 10 in the poll having moved up two slots from the week before.

That makes two Big Ten teams in the top 10 of Sunday’s poll (Ohio State, 4-0, is No. 3).

In all likelihood, it would have been three programs in the poll’s top 10 had Northwestern not been upset at Michigan State. With the loss, the 5-1 Wildcats check-in at No. 16.

Indiana is hoping that things end better than 1987 where they reached as high as No. 11 in the rankings but saw out the season 8-4 and unranked, losing in the Peach Bowl 27-22 to Tennessee. This team has the potential to make a New Year’s Day Bowl Game and even has an outside shot at the College Football Playoff.

But for now, the fact that Indiana has been ranked for six straight weeks is an accomplishment.

It may not sound like much but for a program with an all-time record of 473-661-38 that has finished the season ranked just five times…yeah, this is something to feel good about.
